With all the buzz around clean beauty over the past few years, great progress has been made in well-formulated, truly clean, and good-for-you skin care. We broke clean beauty in the pastHowever, there can be a lot of misleading labels and claims out there. We thought it would be helpful to do the heavy lifting for you and outline exactly what vegan skincare is (and share some of our favorite vegan brands!). While vegan products are often associated with the clean beauty movement, they don’t always fall under the same umbrella.

Many brands that carry labels such as organic, clean, or cruelty-free may still use animal-based ingredients, such as lanolin or beeswax. In order for a line of skin care products to be completely vegan, these ingredients are often swapped for effective alternatives such as fruit waxes or vegetable oils. While it may seem difficult to understand, with a few key tips it can be pretty easy to spot – many of our favorite brands are vegan. In fact, you probably already have a vegan product or two in your current range without realizing it!

To break it all down, we chatted with Tara Pelletier, formulator and co-founder of the vegan skin care brand Meow Meow Tweet to help break down everything vegan skin care and help make it as easy as possible for people to find the right products. Read on for everything you need to know about vegan skin care, plus 14 of our favorite brands of 100% vegan skin care products and basic products approved by each brand’s publisher.

What makes a skin care product vegan?

Just like dietary restrictions, vegan skincare forgoes the use of ingredients that are sourced or derived from animals. This could include popular skin care ingredients such as beeswax, collagen, or keratin, even if those ingredients are ethically sourced. Pelletier shares that for their brand, vegan skincare appears to “not use any ingredients of animal origin in our natural products and make decisions that minimize the harm to people, animals and the planet. It’s a choice of life rooted in antispecismo and respect for all beings “.

This type of approach extends the care beyond the ingredients themselves, to the way they are purchased. Even brands like Meow Meow Tweet choose not to source materials that could harm animals’ habitats or food sources.

How do you know if a product is vegan?

The easiest way to spot a vegan product is via the “Certified Vegan” logo that many vegan skin care products have. But Pelletier encourages you to go further. “Learn to read ingredient labels,” says Pelletier. “First scan the product label and packaging, read the full list of ingredients and find out if any of the ingredients are derived from animals.”

Here is a cheat sheet of common animal-based ingredients to help you as you learn what to watch out for:

Are vegan and cruelty free products the same thing?

While vegan implies the absence of animal ingredients and derivatives, cruelty-free means that the product has not been tested on an animal at any stage of the product development. Pelletier warns that “just because a product is vegan doesn’t mean it hasn’t been tested on animals, so familiarize yourself with the brand that creates the product.”

What are the benefits of vegan skin care products?

“Where conventional beauty contains ingredients designed to do a specific job, plant-based beauty works by bringing together ingredients that enhance the skin’s natural function,” explains Pelletier. Vegan skin care not only offers benefits such as promoting kindness and caring for animals and reducing environmental damage, but it can put an emphasis on herbal ingredients that have been used for centuries for their healing properties. Many vegan products are packed with antioxidant-rich vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties, and Pelletier explains, “Plant-based lipids and waters make skin cells slick, hydrated, hydrated and damage-free, helping them do what they already know how to do. “

If you are unfamiliar with clean beauty or vegan skin care, something to note is that many products have a shorter shelf life due to the lack of synthetic stabilizers and freshly refined organic ingredients. Pelletier says most natural beauty products should be used within three to six months of purchase to ensure maximum freshness.
