Two of Fran Drescher’s former co-stars in The babysitter have come out in support of his political rival, Matthew Modine, in the race to be the next SAG-AFTRA president. Charles Shaughnessy and Madeline Zima also endorse the Membership First candidate list spearheaded by Modine and her running mate, Joely Fisher.
A third former cast member, Renee Taylor, endorses Fisher in her career to become the union’s next secretary-treasurer, but remains neutral in the presidential race. (Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story said it was endorsing Modine.) Yet none of them said anything negative about Drescher or his running mate, Anthony Rapp, running on the ruling party’s Unite for Strength ballot.
It’s official: only Fran Drescher and Matthew Modine qualify for the SAG-AFTRA presidential race; Half of the 26 races of local presidents are not contested
“Our leadership has always been trying to catch up,” says Shaughnessy, who played the Broadway producer who employed Drescher’s character as his babysitter and later married her on the show, in a video posted by Modine’s camp. (see below). “They just haven’t realized what is happening. They have not done the research and they have not expected what is coming around the corner. It is time for us to change that. We need leadership that has vision. That can anticipate the next revolution and negotiate on our behalf between a model, a system, into which the future can be fitted so that we are not trapped once again. And that is why I support Matthew Modine as National President and Joely Fisher as SAG-AFTRA National Secretary-Treasurer. Because they have the experience, and the vision, to anticipate where things are going from now on. negotiate to protect what we have now. But also to negotiate what we will need in the future. In what it is, we all know, a very uncertain future. So please join me in voting for Matthew Modine and Joely Fisher for SAG-AFTRA Membership First. “
Said Taylor, who played the mother of Drescher’s character in The babysitter, He is also a Membership First candidate for delegate to the next union convention. “My best friend Connie Stevens was SAG’s legacy secretary of the treasury,” he said. “Joely Fisher is like a daughter to me.
