Whether you know it or not, shampooing is one of the hardest parts of hair care. Do you wash your hair every day? How to wash it? I mean, you just drop it and rinse it, right? Unfortunately, not everything is so black and white.
There are some common shampoo missteps worth investigating so as not to repeat them.
1. Too much or too little shampooing
As we’ve established, this dubious’ 90s hairstyle trend is returning this summer, so shampooing your hair every day is prohibited. And while some people have gotten to the point of swearing, shampooing only once or twice a month – or not using it at all – may not be the best hair care routine for all people.
Shampooing too often can lead to excessive dryness of the scalp and our hair overcompensating for its natural oils. But shampooing too little can lead to the itchy, oily feeling most of us are familiar with.
The ideal frequency of shampooing depends on your hair, but most people wash their hair every other day and once a week. Experiment and find out what works best for you!
2. Wrong massage.
Scalp massage is also an important part of shampooing. But we don’t all do it right. Try massaging your scalp in a circular motion with your fingertips rather than your nails.
Be sure to massage your scalp for a few minutes each time you apply shampoo. Don’t skimp on the time you do, or you will shorten the vital cleansing time. This way you get healthier scalp and hair – what’s not to like?
3. Shampoo the wrong parts of the hair.
Shampooing is really all about the scalp. This is what it is for cleaning, and this is where you should (mostly) store it.
Some of us make the mistake of rubbing shampoo into every part of our hair. But it’s best to avoid the tips when applying shampoo to your hair. This way your end won’t dry out.
If you get good lather when you massage your scalp, then there should be enough shampoo residue to rinse off the remaining hair while you rinse it. But is it a hard and fast rule to keep shampoo away from your fingertips? Nope. But this is a good rule of thumb.
