STRAP UP FOR ADVENTURE IN THE OKAVANGO DELTA

Going on a safari is, for many, a unique experience. For an introductory journey – punctuated by incredible hospitality and breathtaking scenery – Botswana’s Okavango Delta is where you want to be. The topography changes drastically from one end of the delta to the other; it makes sense to divide a living room into two or three fields to absorb its majesty. Wilderness Safaris operates several beautifully appointed and strategically placed camps – the classic King’s Pool in Linyanti and the cool, contemporary Qorokwe near Moremi are two of the favorites.

A safari is adventure. Get your binoculars ready, get into a rigged Land Cruiser and start scanning the horizon for giraffes, buffaloes and big cats like cheetahs and lions. As your excellent guide will tell you, it’s not about spotting the big five, but about appreciating the fleeting wonder of the natural world in its entirety.

Near the Namibian border, King’s Pool Camp is a series of thatch and canvas villas on the banks of a glass pool (it looks quiet during the day but comes alive at night when hippos climb the banks to graze). Take a helicopter ride for a bird’s-eye view of rivers teeming with buffalo, crocodile, and herds of elephants and zebras. The sundowners (which are safaris speak for evening cocktails) take place on the hood of a Land Cruiser before returning to the lodge for dinner, storytelling, and eye closure before the next adventure.
