Tip 1: The poll says!
Before you start designing, it’s important that you take a minute to think about how you will use your patio space. Some people love a living room for afternoon cocktails and others prefer a place to dine outside, or maybe you like a bit of both? Decide what your must-have features are and start designing from there.
Tip 2: create zones
Zoning your space is especially important for small spaces. This will help your area feel larger and more functional. I always like to opt for smaller furniture instead of a large sofa or armchair. This will help your patio areas have a bit more variety.
Having a multi-functional outdoor patio can make you feel like you’ve just gained an extra room and space for entertaining. I love making sure there is a small table to serve food, a round bistro table with two chairs (and an additional two if needed!), And a small sofa for two or a comfy chair to overflow. Choose furniture that can be duplicated as other items, as well as storage.
Tip 3: use different textures
Time to ditch the handmade patio sets. When it comes to furniture, don’t feel like you need to match all the wood grain or sofa cushion. It’s okay to change it! In fact, it will help divide the space. If this seems like a challenge, stick to a general color palette like teak browns or shades of gray and weave textures like rattan, reed, or even a metallic accent. I love using a mix of indoor and outdoor furniture to make the space feel elevated.
Tip 4: Ground the area.
Literally! An outdoor rug is a must. Adding a great rug will warm up the space and make it feel cohesive. A rug also adds an extra layer of comfort, personality, and makes you feel like you’ve created an indoor, outdoor space.
Tip 5: add greenery
What is an outdoor space without a bit of greenery? If you have a patio or balcony in an apartment, plants can give you that garden feel we all crave outside. I like to opt for a variety of herbs like mint, rosemary, and lavender that can double as cocktail garnishes and add flavor to a variety of summer dishes.
Tip 6: create personality
I love creating any space (indoor or outdoor) that has a bit of personality. You can add your own flair with patterns for pillows, tableware, and lighting. If you want to take things to the next level, consider items like an outdoor Bluetooth speaker or wireless projector if you have a blank wall to use as a screen.
