All Elite Wrestling is coming out of its biggest pay-per-view of the year with All Out. The promotion will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday with Full Gear 2021 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. The card will focus on the highly anticipated AEW World Championship match between friends-turned-enemies Kenny Omega and “Hangman” Adam Page.

Page and Omega have been on a collision course for the past year since former tag partners had a falling out. Omega went on to become AEW champion by defeating Jon Moxley. Page scratched and clawed the title photo; he intends to eliminate his former partner and fulfill his dream of becoming AEW champion.

MJF def. Darby Allin

Two of AEW’s four pillars kicked off Full Gear in front of a glowing crowd. While MJF has been praised for his exceptional mic skills, some have wondered if his work between the strings could match. Well, that question has been answered as these two raised the bar for the rest of the show. An exceptional opening grappling sequence set the stage for a fantastic showdown where Allin often had to find a way to work from underneath the bigger and stronger MJF. But when Darby had those moments, he took full advantage of them. A suicidal dive in which Allin went full speed in MJF served as the highlight of physicality to come.

Other highlights included a second rope stunner from Allin and MJF that countered a climb in a backbreaker powerbomb, an MJF tombstone piledriver on the edge of the ring apron, and an inverted Code Red from MJF in another powerbomb. The story told here was Allin slowly working on MJF’s left knee to compromise his opponent. But a bigger story would unfold later, as MJF promised he could beat Allin with a side head grab. He did just that, but only in the way MJF could.

An insane sequence of pinning combinations brought the crowd to their feet when Allin finally hit a Code Red for a near fall. Allin attempted to hit the Coffin Drop but MJF rolled to the outside. What did Allin do? Hit the drop of the coffin on the outside of the ring. Another attempt was thwarted by a knee from MJF. Wardlow and Shawn Spears attempted to interfere for MJF but were thwarted by Sting. It was a smart point to make sure they weren’t involved in the finish.

MJF challenged Allin to hit him with a skateboard. But when Allin reconsidered and asked the referee to discard the skateboard, MJF used the ring of his trunks to punch Allin and pin him with a side head grab, you guessed it.

This match was incredible for a variety of reasons. MJF continues to be the best heel in professional wrestling, but has proven that he can be part of a well-organized match. As for Allin, he bumps like crazy and gives everything he has at every turn. Losing hasn’t hurt him, the future is bright with this company.
