One day after Victoria stepped down as host of the CWG for 2026, there has been much speculation that the Indian city of Ahmedabad could bid to host the event. Victoria had withdrawn late on Tuesday citing budget problems as the reason, where it was in excess of A$6bn, compared to a proposed A$2bn.

According to the Premier of Victoria, Dan Andrews, the budget was too much for a 12-day event. Not only that, other prominent states in Australia have not shown any interest in hosting the event either. Now with just three years to go until the event, Ahmedabad might be interested in hosting the event, according to a report in the Times of India.

The report further suggests that the state government was already planning to prepare for the 2030 CWG and expected infrastructure work to be completed by 2028. So now that Victoria has withdrawn, preparations could intensify for the event in 2026.

Other than that, a senior government source has claimed that all infrastructure work will be completed by 2026. “Ahmedabad’s bid projects for the 2036 Olympic Games will be completed by 2026. Following the development of Victoria by withdrawing from hosting the 2026 Olympic Games Commonwealth Games, Gujarat is confident that it will get the go-ahead from the Union government to bid for the 2026 Games in Ahmedabad,” the sources said.
