Angela Bassett Receives Honorary Oscar After ‘Black Panther’ Snub

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recently announced that Angela Bassett, 64, will receive an honorary Oscar at this year’s Governors Awards. The gold statue will reportedly be presented to the honoree at the 14th annual ceremony on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in Los Angeles.
Academy President Janet Yang said of the movie star:
“The Academy Board of Governors is thrilled to honor four pioneers who have transformed the motion picture industry and inspired generations of filmmakers and movie fans. Throughout her decades-long career, Angela Bassett has continued to deliver transcendent performances that set new standards in acting.”
The Honorary Award is reportedly,
“to honor an extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, outstanding contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”

As previously reported, the veteran actress received her nomination for playing Queen Ramonda in the 2022 Marvel film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” Basset made history as the first Marvel star to receive an Academy Award nomination for his performance in a comic book adaptation. Additionally, the entertainer is the first woman and person of color to be nominated for the prestigious award for her performance in a comic book adaptation.
