Apple’s application accelerator in Bengaluru, India, has become a vital resource for developers looking to stand out in a crowded field, and could serve as the tech giant’s foothold in a burgeoning smartphone market.
The application accelerator allows local application developers to improve their software, learn new skills, and receive tutoring from Apple. Some participants believe that the accelerator gives them at least a two-year advantage over the competition.
In an interview with Indian expressEshwar Vangala, Apple’s senior director of worldwide developer relations, said the Indian developers’ greatest asset is “their entrepreneurial spirit.”
“The current generation of developers is very interested in taking an idea and turning it into an incredibly successful application. In the past, I have come across developers looking for a pot of gold along the way and trying to discover products. That will really make them successful.” Vangala said. “People are looking to give birth to an idea that they are seeing, actually to give their ideas wings to fly.”
Many success stories have originated from the App Accelerator, including 2018 Apple Design Award winner Calzy, the Froggipedia iPad App of the Year, and others.
Apple said last year that some 900,000 jobs in India can be directly attributed to the iOS ecosystem, some of which stem from the acceleration program.
“When people talk to us on the throttle, they are usually born out of a need or a requirement. I think my favorite is Kushagra from Bangalore, who created Cone to help identify ripe mangoes because he is color blind. It may seem like a really small thing, but that’s a need I had and created this app that is now helping you meet millions of people around the world, “said Vangala.
Apple plans to expand the resources it offers to developers, including a new developer center at its Apple Park headquarters in California, even as its App Store policies have come under increasing scrutiny.
India is becoming an increasingly critical market for Apple, despite the Cupertino firm’s small footprint in the country. Apple officially launched its online store in India in 2020 and plans to increase domestic manufacturing.
