Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal are the teams that are widely regarded as the top 6 clubs in the Premier League for the last decade. Arsenal and Spurs couldn’t even get a place in the Europa League last season, which surely makes you wonder if they deserve to be included in one of England’s elites.
North London teams have not done their rich history justice in recent seasons and, on the other hand, some smaller clubs have been far more impressive. For example, Leicester City just won the FA Community Shield by beating the mighty Manchester City. Here’s why Tottenham and Arsenal aren’t among the top 6 teams in the Premier League and the underdogs are getting closer and closer to glory every season.
A RUDE SPELL OF ARSENAL AND STYLE
Arsenal recently lost 2-1 to Hibernian FC in a preseason friendly. Although it was not a league game, the Gunners played with their main team and still lost to a small team from the Scottish Premier League. Arsenal haven’t finished in a Champions League spot in the last 6 years. They finished eighth last season and had the worst attacking performance of the top 9 teams in the league.

Despite having the players, the money and the resources, Arsenal have finished outside the top 6 for 2 consecutive seasons. Arsenal did well against the best clubs in the league last season, but they drowned against the bottom half of the table. Arsenal won both of their games against Chelsea, beat Manchester United, Tottenham and even managed a draw against Liverpool. However, the club lost most of their matches against smaller clubs because they were afraid of losing in the first place.
Arsenal need to believe in their quality without giving in to all the harsh criticism they have faced for some time. Arsenal need to at least finish somewhere in the Europa League and do well in domestic tournaments if they don’t want to stoop to a club that ‘has been’. With the transfer of Ben White and the other transfer prospects this summer, they have a really strong team on their side. All they need is a run of good results and the faith of their fans.
The Spurs also have a top-of-the-line team at 6 and are often in decent shape. The problem with them is that when it comes to the long term, they haven’t been the best. Tottenham always starts their campaign strong and remains in the title showered by Christmas. However, the second half of the season has not been very kind to them in the past. The Spurs will never be one of the best clubs in England until they get some Silverware. Trophies are the most important thing for a football club of their stature, but they will only win if they find some consistency.
Spurs have barely qualified for the Europa League this time around and will have to act alongside Nuno Santos at the helm. A Champions League final will put more respect for your name and help you defend your case. As of now, calling them a top team is moot.
THE PROMINENCE OF LEICESTER CITY AND CO
Leicester City changed the Premier League narrative by lifting the title in 2016. They paved the way for underdog teams to attempt to challenge Europe. Although Leicester have not qualified for the Champions League, they have always been in the race for the last 6 seasons. His team continues to improve every season and he has had a very fruitful transfer period thus far.

Leicester City won the FA Cup trophy last season by beating Chelsea in form. They had a solid record against the so-called top 6 teams last season, but due to a series of poor performances in the last step, they were left out of the Champions League by just one point. Although they do not have financial and commercial supremacy, they have done well in what is arguably the toughest league in the world.
Aston Villa is also a team that has the ability to achieve a Leicester in the coming years. From playing in the Championship in 2018 to being in the running for a Europa League for most of this season. Villa has come a long way with its new owners and the leadership of Dean Smith.

Their growth in the last 3 seasons has been exponential and if they manage to finish in the top 6 this time around, they could even be considered one of the top 6. They have also brought in good signings and the money from the sale of Grealish should help them. in all respects economically.
West Ham finished higher than Spurs and Arsenal last season, making them an equal candidate. West Ham will get a big boost in income from playing in the Europa League next season and if they continue like this they should be considered one of the strongest teams of the lot in no time. West Ham have not fared well against the best teams in the league so far, but they have mastered their authority among the mid-table clubs.
It was fun while it lasted, but with increasing competition in the league, Arsenal and Spurs should no longer be considered the top six until they prove themselves. Leicester City, West Ham, Aston Villa and a few other clubs have more than enough potential to topple the big clubs in the league causing the competition to fizzle out. The Premier League is not going to be the same in the next few years.
