MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas’ recent success in the Fiba Asia Cup qualifiers left no guarantees, not even the head coach position currently held by Tab Baldwin.
Baldwin led the Philippines to a playoff sweep at Clark, highlighted by a pair of impressive victories from longtime rival South Korea.
The impressive turnout generated more clamor for the neo-American strategist to take on the role of Gilas’ full-time mentor.
But that’s not going to be the case, at least not yet, with Baldwin, who also serves as Gilas’ program director, looking to evaluate his and the team’s performance after the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Serbia.
“This is a program and, again, it is fluid. Ongoing decisions will be made on what we think SBP, myself, Coach Ryan (Gregorio), what we think is best for the program, ”Baldwin said on The Chasedown sports program. “So nothing is set in stone. No one is entitled to any of these positions. “
“Everyone needs to know that at any moment, if someone better shows up, they will have the place where you are sitting today. And I think that helps us to perform better every day, ”said Baldwin, Gilas’ third coach in as many Fiba Asia Cup qualifying windows after Mark Dickel and Jong Uichico.
Gilas faces stiff competition in the OQT against powerhouse Serbia on Thursday and the Dominican Republic on Friday.
