An official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defended the mask sweep orders for public transportation as Republican lawmakers push for the mandates to be revoked.
“Masks are really powerful and we need to make sure they are part of our arsenal,” said Marty Cetron, director of the CDC’s Division of Global Migration and Quarantine. said in an interview with Reuters.
“We mask ourselves not only to protect ourselves, but because it is the way we take care of ourselves and express our concern for others.”

Current CDC guidance advises the use of masks for travelers, regardless of vaccine status, on any type of public transportation.
The Federal Aviation Administration extended its mask requirement on airplanes until September 13.
Masks on airplanes have been a point of contention, with three out of four unruly passenger complaints coming from passengers who do not obey mask rules.
“The truth is that the unvaccinated portion that is out there is extremely vulnerable,” Cetron said.
“I understand that we have all gotten through this emotionally, but I think we will make it through together if we realize that the virus is the enemy and it is not your fellow citizen or the person sitting next to you on an airplane or a piece of cloth that you have to. wear over your face, “Cetron added.
The mandate is constantly reviewed and can be changed at any time, he added.
Republicans tried to lift the command of the mask on public transportation in June, but the effort was blocked by Senate Democrats.
