Conservative leader finally denounces far-right group after rape threat against his wife

After months of pressure to denounce members of a far-right group, the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party of Canada has lashed out at them after they made comments about sexually assaulting his wife.

After months of pressure to denounce members of a far-right group, the newly elected leader of the Conservative Party of Canada has lashed out at them after they made comments about sexually assaulting his wife.

In a statement by Pierre Poilievre, a longtime mainstream politician who openly embraced the trucker convoy of anti-COVID measures this year, he called members of the far-right group Diagolon “donkeys” and “losers.”

“These men are garbage. Frankly, like most Canadians, until about a month ago I had never heard of Diagolon and these losers. Everyone is hateful,” he said. “This type of garbage has no place in Canada. No one should face this abuse.”

Jeremy Mackenzie, a far-right influencer and founder of Diagolon, said in a live stream that he and his partner would “rape” Poilievre’s wife because “they just want to show people that we can do things to her if we want to.”

Mackenzie has earned infamy in Canada for being a key figure in the far-right anti-government Diagolon, which experts believe could be dangerous. Two members affiliated with the group were arrested at an Albertan Trucker blockade for allegedly stockpiling weapons they planned to use against police officers who tried to break up the protest. Mackenzie himself had some run-ins with the law, including charged with assault last month.

The RCMP is reportedly investigating the threats.

Before this, Poilievre has resisted distancing from the fringe of the Canadian extreme right.

mackenzie’s commentThe messages were picked up by anti-fascists monitoring the group’s live feed and eventually found their way to Poilievre, who released a statement Monday morning saying “threatening my wife and family is terrible and I will not tolerate it.”

Poilievre, 43, scored a massive CCP leadership election victory in part thanks to the existing wave of anti-Trudeau anger and sentiment born in large part from the pandemic. Courting this audience, the career politician, elected at the age of 25, came into contact with several people associated with Diagolon and refused to denounce the group. However, she had taken part in a debate in the House of Commons in February where Diagolon was mentioned several times. The group’s connection to the plot to attack police officers also received extensive coverage in the national media over the winter.

This summer Poilievre generated significant harassment against a reporter who asked him if he would distance himself from anti-democratic groups. In response, Poilievre issued a press release calling her a “so-called journalist” and saying that she was creating a “false trap.” The same reporter is one of the central targets of a campaign of harassment carried out by Mackenzie and her minions online.

Diagolon is staunchly anti-Trudeau but has also rejected the Conservative Party, which he sees as just another corporate party. However, the group seemed enthusiastic about voting Conservative with Poilievre taking the reins of the party.

In a tirade on Telegram, Mackenzie hinted that is no longer the case.
