Cristiano Ronaldo’s withdrawal from two bottles of Coca-Cola during a press conference at the Euros has coincided with a $ 4 billion drop in the beverage giant’s share price.
The captain of Portugal is a recognized health fanatic and made it clear what he thinks of the carbonated soda. The 36-year-old took the Coca-Cola bottles from him during a press conference in Budapest on Monday in the prelude to his country’s Group F match against Hungary.
Ronaldo followed him by holding a bottle of water before declaring in Portuguese, “Water!” Which seems to encourage people to choose that instead.
Coca-Cola’s stock price fell from $ 56.10 to $ 55.22 almost immediately after Ronaldo’s gesture, a 1.6% drop. Coca-Cola’s market value went from $ 242 billion to $ 238 billion, a drop of $ 4 billion.
Coca-Cola, one of the official sponsors of Euro 2020, responded on Tuesday with a statement saying that “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” with different “tastes and needs”.
A Euros spokesperson said: “Players are offered water, along with Coca-Cola and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, upon arrival at our press conferences.”
Ronaldo is a pop culture colossus, with nearly 300 million followers on Instagram.
On Tuesday, he scored two goals in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary, beating French great Michel Platini as the top scorer in the European Championship finals with 11.
