With all the cancellation news from NBC, it’s good to see a show getting good news from its respective network. It has been announced that the drama produced by Jessica Biel, Cruel summer, has been renewed on Freeform for a second season.
Cruel summer now he has also become the youngest cabler most viewed series in history. If you wonder what about pretty Little Liars? Well, Freeform was formerly the ABC Family and since the rebrand, Freeform hadn’t found its trademark success … until now. Freeform president Tara Duncan spoke about why the show was successful and why it was an “easy” decision to renew the series:
“I think what has really resonated with audiences is that there is a very clear and strong mystery, but a mystery that is told from the point of view of two characters that people can really relate to. That core concept of ‘is evergreen grass on the other side? ‘and that’ who do you believe Jeanette or Kate? ‘perspective and that the story should change depending on the shoes you put on, I think it’s one that is really relatable to this audience. The idea of a mystery unfolding that is told week after week is one that the audience obviously I have answered “
Cruel Summer was brought into the series a year and a half ago under then-Freeform president Tom Ascheim and stars Olivia Holt, Chiara Aurelia, Michael Landes, Froy Gutierrez, Harley Quinn Smith, Allius Barnes, Blake Lee, and Brooklyn Sudano. . The series follows two teenagers in the 1990s and the repercussions in everyone’s lives after one is kidnapped and the other seemingly takes her place. How the show will come back is a bit of a complicated idea. The anthology format seems like the ideal direction, but it is not decided whether the mystery will return with a new story with the same characters and actors or using the same storytelling device with an entirely new cast of characters.
The show has been a critical hit. earning a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and it has held up well in qualifications. With 35 days of cross-platform viewing, Cruel summer averages 6.8 million total viewers per day. It ranks as the No. 1 new cable drama of the year among women ages 18 to 34, with its most recent episode up 31 percent from its April series debut. The series has also done well on Hulu, where all Freeform originals are available for streaming the day after the linear debut. The series was the most-watched first season title the next day on a linear channel in its first seven weeks to date on the Disney-owned platform. Season 1 of the series wrapped up last night on Freeform and executive producers Jessica Biel and Michelle Purple of Iron Ocean Productions also starred on the returning show for a second season:
“We are very proud of this show and the incredible cast and crew who brought so much hard work and determination to each scene. This would not have been possible without them and our intellectual showrunner, Tia Napolitano. Season two is a dream and we have lots of ideas about it. where can we take this next. We are excited to be working with our brilliant team of creatives on this project, as well as our partners at Freeform and eOne, including Jackie Sacerio, who brought the project for us. To audiences who have been tuning in on this schedule week after week, thank you. This is it for you! “
Now that the show has been officially renewed, I’ll add it to my binge list because I haven’t heard anything but good things about the show. You’ve been watching Cruel summer?
