At the Girl Up Leadership Summit on July 14, 2020, Meghan Markle delivered a powerful speech on the need to fight racism and the importance of gender equality. Speaking remotely, the Duchess of Sussex said: “The moment we are living in right now asks all of us to do more. It is a time when their voices and their actions have never been so urgently needed, ”he said. “The path to get there will take us all: girls and women, men and boys. It will take blacks and whites to collectively address the inequalities and structural problems that we know exist, ”he continued.
“All of you… are setting the tone for an equitable humanity. Not figuratively, literally. This is a humanity that desperately needs you. To push it, to push us, energetically in a more inclusive, fairer and more empathetic direction,” he stated ” Not just framing the debate, but being in charge of the debate – on racial justice, gender, climate change, mental health and wellness, civic engagement, public service and so much more. That’s the work you’re already doing. “
He went to speak empathetically about the need to overcome fear and be brave, despite the circumstances.
“Often times, it is fear that paralyzes us and prevents us from being brave and daring. But don’t underestimate that you have some of the answers. Don’t underestimate your ability to overcome fear. He has, rooted in his convictions, the ability to create a world that he knows is fair and kind. Your instinct will tell you what is right and what is wrong; what is fair and unfair. The hardest part, and it was the hardest part for me, is pursuing your convictions with action. “
In 2010 Girl Up was created by the UN Foundation to provide support to UN agencies that help adolescent girls.
