MANILA, Philippines – EJ Obiena did it again on Saturday with his latest feat in Sweden.
The Tokyo Olympian captured the gold medal in the 2021 Taby Stavhoppsgala street pole vault in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
Obiena triumphed after exceeding 5.80 meters and overtook reigning Olympic champion Thiago Braz of Brazil and Andrew Irwin of the United States, who finished second and third, respectively.
Both Braz and Irwin also reached 5.80 meters, but Obiena took the gold due to fewer failed attempts.
Another first place, without rest for the determined. Thanks PAMSE for this post.
The second-generation star’s victory came just two days after he reset the Philippines record with a 5.87m jump for the silver medal at the Irena Szewinska Memorial Bydgoszcz event in Poland.
“Another first place, without rest for the determined,” Obiena published on social networks.
It was the second time in a month that Obiena beat Braz for the first prize. Last month, Obiena beat Braz to take the gold medal at the Folksam Athletics Grand Prix in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The two, who are also training partners, also shared gold recently at the True Athletes Classics in Leverkusen, Germany.
