
India’s Ankit Narwal suffered a heavy loss on his tournament debut and withdrew from the 2nd Elorda Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Facing Kazakhstan’s Sultan Mussinov, Ankit put up a tough fight but went down fighting to endure a 0-5 loss and exited the tournament.
On Wednesday, six Indian boxers will step into the ring for their respective first tournaments. The 2016 World Championships silver medalist sonia foam (57 kg) will face Viktoriya Grafeyeva of Kazakhstan in her tournament opener.
Alongside Sonia, female boxers Shvinder Singh Kaur (50kg) and Poonam (60kg) will also be in action. While Shvinder will go head to head with Kazakhstan’s Turapbay Gulnar, Poonam will take on Kazakhstan’s Issayeva Shakhnaz.
Men’s boxers Zoram Muana (51kg), Hemant Yadav (71kg) and Sanjay (80kg) will also start their respective campaigns.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has sent a 16-member team in both men’s and women’s categories to compete in the tournament. Having won 14 medals in the previous edition of the competition, India will be determined to improve their tally this time around.
The gold medalists of the tournament will receive USD 700, the silver medalists will receive USD 400, while the two boxers who will take the bronze medals will receive USD 200 each.
