Fantasy WR PPR Rankings Week 9: Who to start, sit at the wide receiver in fantasy football

As we move closer to the fantasy playoffs, we continue to accumulate more numbers of goals and yardage data to help us build our weekly fantasy WR PPR rankings. Ahead of week 9, there are many obstacles, including byes, injuries and matchups, that will keep you from fielding the optimal starting lineups, but our leaderboards can help you figure out who to start with in the deepest position of fantasy football.

Antonio Brown (ankle) has been inactive for the past few weeks, so his owners know what it’s like to be without him. However, with Tampa arriving this week, owners of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin will be missing their stars as well. DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett are out of action, so let’s just hope the next time they take the field it will be with Russell Wilson (finger). You can’t even use Terry McLaurin this week, and hopefully you’ve never counted on any Lions WR this year.

STANDARD RANKINGS WEEK 9:
quarterback | Run back | Large receiver | Tight end | D / ST | Kicker

Attractive bubble start-or-sit games include Jamison Crowder (@ Colts), Jerry Jeudy (@ Cowboys), Cole Beasley (@ Jaguars), and Hunter Renfrow (@ Giants). Each match is against teams in the lower half of the league in fantasy points per game allowed to WR, so the PPR advantage should be there. They have all proven to be highly targeted and more attractive products in this format. Crowder has been shown to draw at least a solid number of targets, regardless of the matchup or regardless of who his QB is, although his outlook is better if Corey Davis (hip) is out again. Renfrow and Crowder don’t have the high ceilings like Jeudy and Beasley, but you can do a lot worse at this point in week 9.

RANKINGS WEEK 9 PPR:
quarterback | Run back | Tight end | D / ST | Kicker

Going a little deeper, DeVante Parker (vs. Texans), Tajae Sharpe and Russell Gage (@ Saints), Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb (@ Chiefs), Marquez Callaway and Tre’Quan Smith (vs Falcons), Chase Claypool (vs Even Bears), Henry Ruggs (@ Giants) and Van Jefferson (vs. Titans) are in good positions. Not all of these guys are traditional PPR receivers (especially Smith, Lazard, Claypool, Ruggs, Jefferson), but given the matchups, they still have some booms or bust to the upside.

WEEK 9 FANTASY: dormant | busts | Start them, sit down

Parker has the top floor of this bunch, but if you think you need big points from your WR3 or flex spot, you can try for older guys. Sharpe and Gage are the biggest question marks, as Sharpe picked up the game last week with Calvin Ridley (personal) out, but Gage has been more productive in the past.

WEEK 9 DFS: The best stacks | The best values | Lineup builder

Jakobi Meyers (@ Panthers) appears to be in a tough spot this week, but since he usually draws a steady number of goals, he should have a WR3-worthy afternoon. DeVonta Smith (vs. Chargers) wasn’t reliable enough to fully trust him against one of the league’s least generous teams for WR, but his roof still gives him some WR3 potential.

Marvin Jones (against Bills) and Laviska Shenault (against Bills) have also disappointed this season, and we can’t expect them to unlock against Buffalo. The same things can be said of Odell Beckham Jr. (@ Bengals) and Jarvis Landry (@ Bengals). We beat the table to get out and snatch Michael Gallup (vs. Broncos) off the waivers, but if he comes back this week, he’s not a must in this matchup as his teammates are.

Another interesting player is Rashod Bateman (vs. Vikings). The matchup isn’t great and if Sammy Watkins (hamstring) returns, it’s hard to say how involved Bateman will be. Fantasy owners love physically awesome rookies, but Bateman is arguably riskier than many believe, especially in PPR leagues.

Keep an eye on Michael Thomas’ injury updates (against the Falcons). He may still be a few weeks away, but it would be hard to keep him set aside against Atlanta’s secondary suspect if he’s active. We love chasing the upside, and Thomas would immediately have more upside than the large group of WR found in the later part of the standings. Will Fuller (against the Texans) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling (@ Chiefs) are also likely to return this week, and given the matchup, both have boom or bust potential.

UPDATE 11/3: Michael Thomas (ankle) will reportedly not play this season. Feel free to drop it if you’ve hidden it in an IR point.

Grade: We will update these WR PPR rankings as needed during the week, so check out the latest changes and analysis.
