FCC commissioner asks to remove TikTok from app stores due to security concerns

The head of the Federal Communications Commission urges Google and Apple to remove TikTok from their app stores due to data security concerns.

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr tweeted on Wednesday that the app “harvests swaths” of data that China can access, CNBC reports.

car, who mentioned a BuzzFeed News report showing how the sensitive data of TikTok users in China has been repeatedly accessedhe called the app an “unacceptable” security risk to the US. He added that the app also did not comply with the policies in each company’s app stores.

Carr also requested that Google and Apple provide statements on the matter on or before July 8.

HuffPost has reached out to TikTok, the parent company of Google, Alphabet, and Apple for comment.

In a statement to CNNTikTok described the BuzzFeed News report as “misleading.”

“Like many global companies, TikTok has engineering teams around the world,” TikTok stated. “We employ access controls such as encryption and security monitoring to protect user data, and the access approval process is overseen by our US-based security team. TikTok has consistently maintained that our engineers in locations outside U.S. authorities, including China, may have access to U.S. user data as needed under those strict controls.”

BuzzFeed News, which is owned by the same parent company as HuffPost, wrote in a statement backing up their reporting.

TikTok announced earlier this month that it plans to move US user data from servers in Virginia and Singapore to the Oracle cloud platform. CNN reporting. However, it’s not clear when those servers will be “deleted” as the data moves to Oracle.

TikTok and its Chinese-owned parent company, ByteDance, have come under fire for data security in recent years. The Trump administration attempted to ban TikTok from app stores due to concerns about its security. A federal judge’s ruling blocked the effort in 2020, reports CNN.
