First impressions of the HP 14s laptop. – News Block

Laptops under ₹50,000 have been an attractive segment and there are many laptops at this price point which creates a lot of confusion. Today we have an HP 14s fr0012au laptop. It is priced in this segment. I have used this laptop for about 5 days now and here are my impressions and I will also share the pros and cons that I have noticed in this short period.

BUILD AND DESIGN:

The HP 14s is made of plastic but it is of good quality and you will feel it when you touch it. There is an air outlet at the rear and an inlet at the front. The speakers are placed above the keyboards. The touchpad is below the keyboard, and the keyboard itself is full-size with no number pad. It is a small, compact, thin and light laptop. At only 1.45kg in weight, it is truly light and portable. On the left, you have a full-size SD card reader and some LED indicators, while on the right you have a headphone jack, a USB type-c port, 2 USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and a charging port. There are rubber cleats at the bottom for better grip. The hinge is also very durable at first glance. But it can’t be lifted with just one hand if you really care. And also, the hinge limits, that is, it does not open far enough.

SCREEN:

It carries a 14-inch FHD (1980×1080) resolution screen and due to this size it is really compact. It’s more of a glossy screen than a matte one and will therefore reflect a lot of light. But the screen quality is really great. The colors are well produced and well done and it is one of the best screens in this segment. If you’re looking for a laptop for photo editing at this price, then you should probably look at this one. Also, the screen gets really bright with 250 nits of brightness. The bezel around the screen is quite thin and textured. When you talk about multimedia experience, the videos will look really great but the front speakers are loud but the quality is not up to par. I will recommend using headphones or external speakers with it.

HARDWARE:

HP 14s is powered by AMD Ryzen 5 3450u processor with built-in AMD Radeon Vega 8 GPU. It comes with 8 GB of RAM, of which 2 GB is used by GPU. The Ryzen 5 3450u is a 4 core 8 thread CPU. This laptop is not designed for gaming but you can do light gaming on this device. This device is for professionals and students and not for hardcore gamers. It also has a webcam for video calls and it is a 720p webcam. The quality is poor like a typical laptop camera.

SOFTWARE:

It runs Windows 10 out of the box and also comes with Microsoft Office. The experience for the most part is fine. It was really stable every time I used it.

KEYBOARD AND TOUCH PAD:

As I mentioned earlier, it’s a full-size keyboard with no numpad. The keyboard gives a good response when you type on it. I have written this entire article on your keyboard and it will not cause tiring. The keys are not backlit, which is a con. The lettering is gray in color on the silver keys, so visibility sometimes becomes an issue. Also, the arrow keys felt a bit difficult to use due to their placement, but you’ll get used to it. The trackpad is wide but short in height. It supports multiple gestures and works absolutely fine. It feels good when you touch it. In general, both the keyboard and the touchpad are approved.

BATTERY AND CHARGING:

This machine packs a 41 Whr battery which, at first glance, lasts around 5 hours with normal internet-based usage. One peculiar downside we noticed was that when the laptop is asleep, it drains a lot of juice from the battery. The charger is rated at 65 watts and charges via the proprietary charger on the right side of the laptop and takes around 1 hour to fully charge.

OTHERS:

Ports on the device (SD card reader is on the other side).

The laptop comes with 1x 8GB DDR4 RAM which is expandable up to 16GB, 512GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD, Bluetooth 4.2, Wi-Fi etc. There’s no fingerprint scanner or support for Windows Hello.

Yes, there are some minor drawbacks with the device, but I haven’t noticed any major flaws. This is a laptop primarily for students, professionals, and those who need a thin and light laptop.

I bought this laptop around ₹43,000. The price keeps changing and once touched ₹50,000 on Flipkart. Only get this laptop if the price is around ₹45,000. When you look at the laptop overall, it’s a good package for that price.

This was just our first impression and please wait for the review of it. What do you think of the HP 14s? Let us know in the comments below. Follow our blog for more updates.
