A long and difficult football season is coming to an end in Europe. Unfortunately, fans were unable to see their favorite teams and players this season due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, some of the major leagues have begun to bring in smaller capacity fans for the later games of the season. Clubs’ attention will now turn to the 2021 summer transfer window.
Throughout the 2020/21 season, numerous players have continued to grow and improve in front of the empty stands. As clubs look to improve the roster for next season, it is the right time to look at young players who have seen a significant increase in their transfer values. According CIES Football Observatory, here are the top five players in terms of transfer value.
Marcus Rashford has been part of Manchester United’s first team since 2016. The English forward continues to improve with each season. He has played 56 games this season in all competitions and has scored 21 goals and nine assists to his name. With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rashford has become one of the best players in the Premier League.
Rashford’s transfer value is between 150-200 million euros and he was valued at 152 million euros last season. With the England international improving his numbers and having a long contract at United, his transfer value remains the best among young players in Europe. Rashford will look to continue his good form with England at the Euro.
Borussia Dortmund’s prolific number nine needs no introduction as most fans are aware of his capabilities and goal standards. The Norwegian has scored 40 goals in 41 appearances with 26 goals in the Bundesliga, three in the German Cup and one in the German Super Cup. The Norwegian forward is also the top scorer in the Champions League this season with ten goals.
Haaland’s market value is currently between 150-200 million euros. It has seen a significant increase, as it was valued at € 107.3 million in 2020. Haaland’s future is uncertain at Dortmund as rumors that he will leave Dortmund are growing stronger. Mino Raiola has already had talks with Real Madrid and Barcelona about Haaland, but the Champions League qualification for Dortmund could see him stay in Germany for one more season.
Phil Foden has taken the world by storm this season. He has been a regular starter for the best team in Europe this season: Manchester City. The 20-year-old star is dubbed the next big thing in England. In 27 Premier League games, Foden has scored eight goals and has five assists to his name. Foden has been growing steadily under Pep Guardiola for the past four seasons.
Foden’s market value last season was € 60 million, but this year’s brilliant performances have seen his transfer value skyrocket to € 120-150 million. In such a young career, Foden has won three major league titles, four Carabao Cups, one FA Cup, two FA Community Shields and the U-17 World Cup with England. Foden will play his first Champions League final this season and would also be a key player for Gareth Southgate’s English team at the European Championship. Along with performances in the field, Foden’s transfer value will continue to increase in the years to come.
Atlético de Madrid’s young star Joao Félix remains one of the brightest prospects in world football. The 2019 Golden Boy award winner completed a transfer to Atlético Madrid for £ 126 million, making him the fourth-largest transfer in football and the most expensive transfer in Atlético’s history. Felix had a challenging season as he scored just seven goals in 30 La Liga appearances, but has ten goals in all competitions.
Despite an unpleasant season, his market value has increased to a value between 120-150 million euros this season from 107.9 million euros in 2020. Felix is going to be a great asset to the Portuguese attack in Euros. The value of the young man will continue to rise in the coming years due to his long contract at the club and his gradual growth.
Paris Saint-Germain and French star Kylian Mbappé is one of the best players in the world. As well as improving each season, the young French forward has earned several individual and team accolades. Mbappé has won 4 Ligue 1 titles, 3 Coupe de France, 2 Coupe de la Ligue, 2 Champions Troops and the 2018 FIFA World Cup in his short career so far.
In fact, he’s still 22 years old, which makes his trophy cabinet even more astonishing. Given that Mbappé has only one year of contract with PSG, his market value has fallen between 120-150 million euros from 259.2 million euros in 2020. In the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign, Mbappé has been the top scorer with 30 goals in 26 appearances. Meanwhile, the Champions League campaign saw him score eight goals in ten games, including a hat-trick against Barcelona in the round of 16. The French star has scored 41 goals in 46 appearances in all competitions. PSG expects to renew Mbappé’s contract after confirming the extension of Neymar Jr.’s contract.
