Gore, who has been selected five times in the Pro Bowl during his 16-year NFL career, could be destined to face Williams, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic. Gore reportedly he has turned down NFL offers to train for boxing and his eyes have been fully on the sport since at least August.

“I just fell in love with how hard it is,” Gore said. “I felt like, ‘Dude, I couldn’t fight.’ And I always like a challenge. So I kept doing it and doing it and I saw myself improving more and more. “

Gore isn’t the first former soccer star to get his hands in the ring. Six-time Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson faced MMA fighter Brian Maxwell in June, going far in a four-round bout.

Gore hired well-known combat agent Malki Kawa, who is also a football agent, and reportedly had a “high profile” brawl in the pipeline dating back to September.

Williams may not be an easy opponent for Gore, who has been known for taking down his enemies as an NFL back. UFC fighter Ryan Spann She said Williams “yelled my a-” in a previous sparring match, and Williams reportedly pitched a fight against former UFC fighter-turned NFL star Greg Hardy.

Gore and Williams would be the newest pair of pro athletes to become boxers. Former three-time NBA Dunk Contest champion Nate Robinson made his ring debut in November 2020, but was knocked out in a bout against Paul.

Gore last played in the NFL during the 2020 season, recording 653 running yards and two touchdowns for the Jets in 15 games played. Gore has clocked exactly 16,000 running yards during his career – third-most of all time – and 81 running touchdowns, which equals 19th all-time.
