Filipino Alex Eala and Russia’s Oksana Selekhmeteva contemplate a Grand Slam final. But first, they will have to dethrone the reigning French Open youth doubles champions.
They will face Eleonora Alvisi and Lisa Pigato of Italy in the semifinals on Friday night, who are just heating up the crown they won last October.
Top seeds Eala and Selekhmeteva withstood the challenge of fifth seeds Petra Marcinko of Croatia and Natalia Szabanin of Hungary (7-6 (7), 7-6 (5), on Thursday night.
They face off on court 14 starting at 11 pm Manila time.
A win would give Eala a chance at another Grand Slam doubles title, counting the 2020 Australian Open trophy with Indonesia’s Priska Nugroho.
His association with Selekhmeteva had previously reached the final, but it was in the pros that they finished runners-up at the W25 Platja D’Aro in Spain last month.
Alvisi and Pigato got rid of Russia’s Tatiana Barkova and Belarusian Aliona Falei (6-3, 6-0) in the other quarterfinals on Friday.
Pigato, 18, and Alvisi, 16, who were seeded unseeded in this year’s tournament, pushed Russia’s Maria Bondarenko and Diana Shnaider (7-6 (3), 6-4) back to win Roland Garros last year.
