It is primarily a batsman’s game and amidst all the big six hits it is sometimes hard to notice some of the best bowling on display. We are referring to the Global T20 Canada competition, which was announced in 2018 and has since completed two successful seasons. Due to multiple obstacles, they were out for a while, but now they are ready to return with the Global T20 Canada 2023 tournament, four years after the last edition. Taking 5 wickets in a T20 game is very uncommon because bowlers only take 4 overs, which is 24 balls in a spell, but this milestone is certainly not impossible. In the two seasons he has been in this competition, only a 5 wicket round it has been achieved and that came thanks to the bowling of New Zealander Ish Sodhi, who represented the Brampton Wolves in the 2019 GT20 Canada season. He went 5/8 in 4 overs against the Montreal Tigers and we don’t think this record will go away anytime soon, especially as he allowed just 8 runs in that spell.

List of GT20 Canada 5-wicket hauls

On several other occasions, players have managed to pick up 4-wicket hauls, including seven such spells in the 2018 GT20 Canada season, and five more aside from Sodhi’s 5-fer in the 2019 season. Of these, only one player has obtained multiple 4-fers in the history of this tournament, with West Indies pacer Sheldon Cottrell picking both in the inaugural 2018 season.

It is astonishing that out of the total 13 times a bowler has taken 4 or more wickets in an innings, 11 of these have been taken by pacers and only two by spinners, including Sodhi and Canada’s Saad bin Zafar. With so much history to build in this tournament, we expect quite a few more entries on this GT20 Canada 5-fers roster, which is very lonely as of now!
