From today, Sony Pictures Entertainment has officially acquired AT & T’s popular Crunchyroll anime streaming service for the great price of $ 1.175 billion and has outlined plans to turn it all into one service.
For the rapidly growing group of people who love anime, this is game-changing news. Imagine Hulu or Disney Plus choosing HBO Max. Just anime.
The plan is to create an anime streaming service to rule them all.
“With the addition of Crunchyroll, we have an unprecedented opportunity to serve anime fans like never before and deliver the anime experience on any platform they choose, from theater, events, home entertainment, gaming, streaming, linear TV. They, everywhere and in every way. want to experience their anime, “said Tony Vinciquerra, president and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.” Our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible. “
“Anime is a fast-growing medium that captivates and inspires excitement among audiences around the world,” added Kenichiro Yoshida, president, president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation. “The Crunchyroll and Funimation lineup will allow us to get even closer to the creators and fans who are the heart of the anime community.”
All of which talks business, let’s create a mega anime streaming service as soon as humanly possible.
What is Crunchyroll?
Crunchyroll is an anime streaming service that currently has 5 million paying subscribers along with 120 million registered users. It licenses and distributes popular anime like Naruto and One Piece, but it also distributes manga, the Japanese comics that these shows tend to be based on.
What is Funimation?
Funimation is a company very similar to Crunchyroll, since it distributes subtitled and dubbed anime in western countries such as the United States. He is currently licensed for great shows like Dragonball Z and Attack on Titan.
What happens next?
Sony will seek to consolidate both services under the same umbrella. It remains to be seen if that means incorporating Crunchyroll content into the Funimation service or creating an entirely new service. Most likely it will be the first. It’s worth mentioning: Many of the top anime shows are already streaming on both Crunchyroll and Funimation.
The deal was tested by the US Department of Justice, rather than the concern that this deal would create a monopoly on anime streaming in the west. But since major streaming services like Netflix are currently investing heavily in anime, this was deemed not to be the case.
The most likely immediate move would be to add additional content to the feature.
“We know you may have questions,” a statement read. posted on Crunchyroll. “Today we begin the work of bringing together two incredible teams to bring them more of what you love. Thank you for your trust and support!”
Despite the positive spin on Crunchyroll and Funimation, there is a certain amount of anxiety among anime fans subscribed to either service. At this time, it’s unclear what it will mean for anime content coming west.
There is also concern for those who translate programs for Western audiences.
The potential to pay for one anime streaming service instead of many is appealing, but some anime fans are concerned about the effects such a monopoly could have on the quality of translations.
