Monster movies are rarely full of complex characters. Usually there is the evil monster to destroy humanity and the heroic characters who try to stop the monster. Legendary MonsterVerse Upcoming Feature Godzilla Vs Kong seeks to add a bit of depth to the iconic battle between the two titular monsters. According to producer Alex Garcia, both Godzilla and Kong have legitimate reasons to fight in their new movie.
“Neither is an antagonist per se … The good thing about this movie is also that it’s the first time we’ve seen Kong leave Skull Island in our mythology. There are a lot of things that come with that. Now it’s coming to a head. according to this new reality, and what does that mean? And similarly, Godzilla is frantically trying to defend his own power structure. And it’s not that Godzilla is a tyrant, but that he is trying to maintain this larger balance that he feels he’s under threat. and he sees Kong as potentially one of those threats. “
In previous MonsterVerse films, Kong was shown to be living a satisfying life on Skull Island, indifferent to the bigger world out there. On the other hand, Godzilla was the unquestionable leader of the rest of the world’s monsters. Now, it seems that since Kong ventures off Skull Island for the first time, the two alpha predators are driven by a desire to protect their territory by trying to destroy each other. Their emotions are bolstered by mentions of an “ancient rivalry” between their species that is said to date back several millennia.
At the center of this titanic struggle is the survival of all humanity. You’d think humans wouldn’t side with any of the monsters, but trailers have shown that the government brought Kong specifically in to fight Godzilla. Garcia goes on to explain that humanity is simply trying to minimize harm by siding with whatever creature does the least harm to society.
“It depends on how you look [Kong and Godzilla]. I think both are characters who fight for something, which is different from them. And those things are sometimes good for us, but they don’t always line up. Neither is inherently bad, but they’re not inherently good either, right? And I think that’s where the complexity of us, of humanity, and our relationship with them comes into play. “
It will be interesting to see how this three-way fight unfolds between the giant lizard, the giant ape, and the humans. Especially once another giant Mechagodzilla monster, created by humans, enters the fray and threatens to lay waste to everything in its path.
Directed by Adam Wingard and written by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, Godzilla vs. Kong stars Alexander Skarsgard, Millie Bobby Brown, Rebecca Hall, and Brian Tyree Henry. The film hits theaters and at HBO Max on March 31. This news originated in Cinemablend.
