Google must pay $400 settlement checks

- Advertisment -

Google and Facebook They’ve existed in fierce competition with each other for years, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t on equal footing from time to time. Case in point: Google’s settlement checks due out later this year offer a case in point. Those payments will give up to $400 to approved members of a large class action case against the search giant.

If this sounds similar to other recent news we reported, our article from earlier this week, detailing $400 Facebook settlement checks — that is because both developments stem from basically the same set of facts. Both Facebook and Google were sued for violating the State of Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act.

Is there a class action lawsuit against Google?

The lawsuit against Google, which you can consult in full right heresays in part:

“Google is actively collecting, storing, and using, without notice, obtaining informed written consent, or posting data retention policies, the biometrics of millions of unwitting people whose faces appear in photographs uploaded to Google Photos in Illinois.”

Those actions would constitute a violation of BIPA, introduced by Illinois lawmakers in 2008. Among other things, that law prohibits companies from collecting and storing biometric data of any kind, including scans of hands and faces. More specifically, that action is prohibited if the company does not inform the individual of what he is doing and how long that data will be kept.

In short, according to a notice about the class action lawsuit? You could be eligible for one of Google’s settlement checks if you appeared in a photo on Google Photos at any time between May 1, 2015 and April 25, 2022. And if you were an Illinois resident during that time.

The final amount of the individual Google Settlement payments will reportedly vary slightly. The estimate is that they range from $200 on the low end all the way up to $400. The final total will depend on a few factors, including how many valid claims come up. As well as the total amount of payment expenses approved by the Court for this case.

It is important to note that if you believe you meet the prerequisites for class membership, you will need to take proactive steps. Also, you must do it on a specific date. to go, which is where you can find claim forms to fill out. Those forms must be submitted online or mailed in by September 24, 2022.

That also means, as you might guess, that the court hearing this case has not yet held a final approval hearing. That hearing will be held on September 28, 2022. On file for that day will be approval of the settlement, as well as approval of attorneys’ fees. Those, by the way, could add up to 40 percent of the $100 million settlement fund.

This class action lawsuit against Google, by the way, is separate from the Facebook settlement. Those checks we mentioned from Facebookwhich was accused of the same violations of the law in Illinois as Google, has actually already started being sent to recipients.
