Greece announced on Saturday that it is implementing various restrictions, including a music ban, on the popular island of Mykonos in an effort to combat a local outbreak of COVID-19.
Deputy Minister of Civil Protection and Crisis Management Nikos Hardalias saying in a statement Saturday that music would be banned from 6pm local time on Saturday. In addition, it would be prohibited to travel between 1 a.m. M. And 6 a. M., Local time, with some exceptions related to work and health.

“We call on the residents, visitors and professionals of our beautiful island to faithfully observe the measures, as well as the island authorities to immediately activate the information and control mechanisms for their observance, so that the spread of the virus and Mykonos can be controlled and limited, ”said Hardalias.
COVID-19 cases have recently been on an upward trend in Greece. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Greece had 2,794 confirmed cases on Friday and reached a recent peak of 3,911 cases on Wednesday. At the end of June, the country had registered between 200 and 600 daily cases.
Mykonos is considered a popular party destination for the wealthy. Greece is dependent on tourism, which accounts for 20 percent of its economy, Reuters noted.
Konstantinos Koukas, Mayor of Mykonos saying in a statement on Facebook Saturday that it was an “unfair decision” that needed to be “fixed immediately.”
“From the very beginning of the pandemic we have stated that everyone’s highest priority is to protect public health and we serve this consistently and seriously. We have always worked with all the competent authorities, we help implement health protocols, we support the Health Center, we provide the necessary means of protection, ”said Koukas.
“It is a fact that in recent days there has been an increase in cases, mainly of younger ages, but a series of other parameters must be counted, such as that many tests on our island are done on visitors who did not live in Mykonos, but used Mykonos airport, ”he added.
