The Memphis Grizzlies made a bit of a shocking pick.

Zach Edey was projected to be a mid- to late-first-round pick at best, but he was taken with the No. 9 pick.

It wasn’t long before the Canadian big man proved them right, as he had a strong outing in his first Summer League game.

In fact, he proved so prepared that there was a major change in his chances of winning the Rookie of the Year award.

As ESPN Bet noted on Twitter, he had the fifth-best odds to win the award before his Summer League debut.

He’s now tied with No. 2 pick Alex Sarr atop the list at +600 odds.

Edey recorded a double-double, blocked four shots and tied the game to force overtime.

He was one of the most dominant players in college basketball for two consecutive seasons.

Given his build, though, some scouts were concerned about his ability (or lack thereof) to become a defensive factor on the perimeter, not to mention the fact that there are always some health concerns surrounding players with a build like him.

Of course, we already know that the Summer League is practically meaningless, for better or worse.

But it’s always good to see players getting off to a good start and showing their confidence early on, especially those who might be asked to start for their teams as soon as the season starts.
