Preview all the action from day five of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, with Argentina, Germany and Brazil among the six teams in action.

Two-time champions Germany feature in the main tie when they take on tournament debutants Morocco in the opening Group H clash, where they will look to avoid a clash with the African team looking to emulate the antics of their men’s counterparts at last year’s Men’s World Cup.

2007 runners-up Brazil, meanwhile, will face tournament rookies Panama in a derby of the Americas in Group F as they look to get off to a strong start to their campaign.

Meanwhile, Italy take on Argentina in Group G, as both teams look to take an early lead in a tough group that includes Sweden and South Africa.

Now, here’s a preview guide to all three matches on Day 6 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Group G – Italy vs Argentina

Following their surprise run to the quarter-finals in 2019, Italy will be eager to at least escape Group G after suffering an embarrassing group stage exit at UEFA Women’s EURO last summer, where they simply lacked their usual quality, but should be favorites to snatch one of the two round of 16 spots in this group if they can improve their game.

Italy will also be buoyant going into this tournament unbeaten in their last four games, but their defense simply can’t be worse than last summer.

Meanwhile, Argentina is unbeaten in six games since the turn of the year with a strong mix of youth and experience; it’s worth noting that they even crashed a friendly penalty shootout against Venezuela, underscoring just how serious they are now with just one goal conceded in those six games.

However, the Argentinians have a winless World Cup hoodoo in the previous three tournaments, but if there is a time to end that rot, it is now if they play their best game and target Italy’s defense, so hopefully this is close, but something in me feels Argentina will have the upper hand.

Prediction: Italy 1-2 Argentina

Group H – Germany vs Morocco

Considered one of the USA’s closest rivals, Germany will no doubt come into this tournament believing they can go one step further than they did at last summer’s UEFA Women’s EURO, which is perfectly doable given the quality of their squad with the likes of Lina Magull and Alexandra Popp.

However, Martina Voss-Tecklenburg’s Germans haven’t exactly reached their best form so far in 2023 with inconsistent results, especially coming into this game after a stunning 3-2 loss to Zambia, underscoring that they might not be the opponents many expect.

Morocco, meanwhile, are an unknown quantity coming into their debut World Cup campaign, but having seen their men’s counterparts put together an astonishing run to the last four at last year’s Men’s World Cup, they will be motivated to go out looking for their own surprises.

However, a draw against Germany feels like their best bet unless they can take Zambia’s heart and lessons and somehow produce their own shock, which I just don’t see happening if Germany can iron out their inconsistency.

Prediction: Germany 2-0 Morocco

Group F – Brazil vs Panama

Runners-up of the 2023 Women’s Finalissima, Brazil are rightly considered among the title contenders with a serious combination of youth and experience, coupled with a relentlessly solid possession-based style in which they are just as dogged defensively when out of possession.

Panama, on the other hand, is making its World Cup debut and it certainly won’t be an easy start when it comes to this game, especially after conceding 12 goals in its last two games against Spain and Japan respectively, which are of similar quality to Brazil.

A 5-4-1 formation is also usually Panama’s preferred formation, but their defense will be absolutely key, especially if they want to stop players like Marta and Debinha, who are expected to lead Brazil’s attack; otherwise I can see a comfortable result coming.

Prediction: Brazil 3-0 Panama
