Hakeem Jeffries is working with Cory Booker to end the sentencing disparity. The two have introduced the EQUAL Act, which aims to eliminate the difference between crack and powder cocaine sentences.
The effort will also retroactively adjust sentences for people affected by wrongful sentences. The effort will require a grassroots effort to pass the law.
The United States incarcerates more people than any other country in the world and is fueled by overcriminalization and unfair sentencing laws that disproportionately affect African Americans and Latinos. The sentence disparity is 18: 1.
