In context: No Man’s Sky turned five over the weekend. The epic space explorer had a difficult launch, being largely incomplete and replete with broken promises. However, the Hello Games developer never abandoned his vision. Through a series of massive updates, it delivered on all of its promises and more, making it arguably one of the best comeback stories in video game history.
No Man’s Sky has seen 16 major updates since its release on August 9, 2016. The first were just installments of items that Hello Games said would be in the game, but did not arrive in time for launch. However, the developers didn’t stop there. Subsequent releases included visual reviews, group exploration, animal companions, cross-platform play, and more.
Monday, Hello Games Sean Murray remembered about the long road from the garbage dump fire to what is now NMS. Each update went to great lengths to add basic gameplay mechanics and in-depth content, and all for free. Many players in the community, including myself, have purchased multiple copies of No Man’s Sky to thank HG for their hard work and for going the extra mile when other developers have thrown in the towel and dismissed the game as a loss.
“It has not always been easy, but what has guided us throughout has been the players and the community,” wrote Murray.
Not only has HG not thrown in the towel, it also plans to continue delivering free content for the foreseeable future. Murray revealed that the next update, titled Frontiers, is in the works and is coming soon. However, neither Murray nor the reveal trailer (above) that he included in his post revealed details about what Frontiers would bring to the game.
“In some ways, [Frontiers] it’s just another update, but in other ways, it’s a missing piece of the sci-fi fantasy we’ve always wanted to add, and very fitting for our fifth anniversary, “Murray joked.” There are still a lot of things we want to do try, so much that we’re still excited about it. The next step on that journey is not far. We will have more to share with travelers at Frontiers very soon. “
The only thing we can say for sure about Frontiers is that it should surprise fans. The track record of his past endeavors reflects that HG is quite capable of adding incredible experiences to his masterpiece. The fifth anniversary update is very likely to be something special.
