Today’s World Developers Conference (WWDC) keynote speech demonstrated that Apple had worked hard over the past 12 months to bring new features to various products. For Mac and macOS Monterey, much of the focus was on FaceTime, Safari, Mac shortcuts, and a few other new or updated features. Then there are these eight characteristics that you may have missed.
Save photos easily
Starting with macOS Monterey, you can now quickly save photos sent to you by clicking a new save button directly to your Messages conversation. Previously, saving a photo to Messages took a few more steps.
Much of the hype for the updated Safari web browser in macOS Monterey has centered on the new tab features. The update also adds the ability for Safari to update sites known to support HTTPS from HTTP automatically. This adds another level of security that is always welcome in web browsers.
During the keynote, Apple spent some time talking about Focus and how the new tool allows you to better control when you receive or do not receive notifications based on what you are doing at the time. There’s no mention of a new rush notification feature, which ensures your most important alerts are never missed. These can include fraud alerts, a reminder about your children, and more.
No configuration required
With the new Universal Control in macOS Monterey, you can move between your Mac and iPad using a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad without missing a beat. No configuration is required for this to happen! Instead, move your input device like you always do, but this time push the cursor from one device to another. Yes, Apple says it is that simple.
No doubt the new Mac shortcuts will eventually replace Automator in macOS. Until then, Apple makes it possible to turn Automator workflows into shortcuts seamlessly. For hardcore Automator users, this should make the transition to shortcuts even easier.
In macOS Monterey, Apple alerts you when applications access the microphone on your Mac. You can find this information in the Control Center or through a new software indicator that uses the camera indicator light.
Advanced fraud protection
With Advanced Fraud Protection, Apple Card users can now use a security code that changes regularly. The tool makes online card number transactions more secure on all Apple devices, including Mac.
