How to install and manage Message apps on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15

The messaging apps on iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 allow you to collaborate with others, share interesting discoveries, play games and decorate your chat with stickers. Here’s what you need to know to start using them.

Apple introduced specific apps for Messages in 2016 with the advent of iOS 10. Since then, Messages App Store has seen the addition of thousands of apps, ranging from games, stickers, collaboration features, payment apps, and more.

Getting started with specific Messages apps is easy and AppleInsider is here to teach you how to add, remove and manage your Messages apps.

How to view existing Messages apps in the app drawer

  1. Open Messages
  2. Start a new message or open an existing conversation
  3. Swipe left or right on the app drawer
  4. Tap the app you want to use

Important: The app drawer is the horizontal band of icons that exists between the message entry field and the on-screen keyboard. If you don’t see it, tap the app icon next to the text entry field, which will change your predictive text in the app drawer.

By default, you will have at least a few apps. You will have the App Store of Messages, Photos, Apple Pay, Memoji, Music and a few others. If you tap on any of these, you’ll be able to use their message-specific features.

You may have other apps as well: Companion message apps for apps already installed on yours i phone, iPador iPod touch. For example, the apps from Duolingo, eBay, and Realtor.com all have an associated Messages app that you can use within Messages.

However, you can also add new apps to Messages. This will require you to log into the specific App Store for messages, which you can do by following these steps.

How to download new apps on Messages

  1. Open Messages
  2. Start a new message or open an existing conversation
  3. Click the App Store icon in the app drawer
  4. Search and download an app you want to use (example: Game Pigeon)

Once you’ve downloaded an app, it should automatically be available in your message’s app drawer.

If you want to keep an app on your iPhone but don’t need it in the app drawer, you can disable it in a few steps.

How to enable or disable apps in the Messages app

  1. Open Messages
  2. Start a new message or open an existing conversation
  3. In the app drawer: Swipe right until you see the button
  4. Click the button
  5. Turn apps on and off
  6. You can also add apps to favorites and non-favorites by pressing the button + Other icons to the left of the app name
  • Preferring an app will move it to the front of the app drawer

How to remove specific message apps

  1. Open Messages
  2. Start a new message or open an existing conversation
  3. In the app drawer: Swipe right until you see the button
  4. Click the button
  5. Swipe left on the app and tap Delete

Grade: You cannot delete some proprietary apps, such as Apple Pay, Music and the Message App Store app.
