Intel Arc Alchemist GPU Shows AI-Powered XeSS Magic In New Riftbreaker Video


Much awaited: The GPU shortage has been a stumbling block for gamers, builders and other users looking for an upgrade since late 2020. Earlier this year, Intel announced that its line of in-house graphics hardware, Arc, would be released. by the first quarter of 2022 to compete directly with Nvidia and AMD. Based on Intel’s recent information and videos, it looks like Team Blue is serious about capturing a piece of the GPU market.

Two of the leading technologies in this generation’s GPU wars have been Nvidia’s Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) and AMD’s super resolution FidelityFX (FSR). Both promise to provide an enhanced visual experience for users, one through an algorithm based on artificial intelligence and specialized hardware, and the other by rendering lower resolution frames and scaling them using an open source algorithm. Intel has never outdone the competition, Intel has thrown its hat in the ring with its own super sampling feature, known as Intel Xe Super Sampling (XeSS).

Intel recently released a video of XeSS in action on an Intel Arc GPU. Unlike previous demonstrations, this latest video from Team Blue offers one of the first real glimpses of 1080p content upscaled and recorded in 4k. The video leaves little to discuss, with the upscaling solution delivering considerably higher quality 4K images.

Intel’s new super-sampling technology offers a distinct edge on the table. While Nvidia relies on specialists tensor nuclei For a hardware-based upscaling solution, XeSS was designed using open standards, similar to AMD’s FSR, to run on all current GPU platforms. This means that users of the Red, Green and Blue teams will have the option to use the new upscaling solution for any supported title.

It is currently unknown what level of compatibility the Intel solution will provide with older generation hardware. AMD’s solution has been well received due to its ability to breathe new life into outdated hardware by offering support for architectures dating back to AMD’s 400 series and Nvidia’s GeForce 10 series.

At the moment there is no shortage of demonstration videos showing DLSS and FSR solutions. Unfortunately, the compression losses experienced by most major video platforms make it difficult to compare each solution to Intel’s XeSS in a side-by-side comparison. We probably won’t be able to see this head-to-head comparison until the actual launch of Intel’s Arc GPUs, but based on Intel’s initial releases, it looks like the company is making big moves to get into the GPU arms race.
