IPL 2021 playoffs

The 2021 IPL play-offs have already seen three participants in Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore. For the remaining 1 place there are four contenders to Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and reigning champions Mumbai Indians. Here’s a look at their possibilities.

IPL points table (after game 48)

Knights Knights of Calcutta

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was seventh in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 points standings after the first half of the tournament. But a recovering KKR team was seen in the second half and with consecutive victories made playoff qualifiers come alive. Their last match is against the Rajasthan Royals who beat them last time. The Knight Riders are in a relatively more comfortable position than the others. They now have 12 points in 13 games and a win over Rajasthan Royals will qualify them for the playoffs regardless of what happens in other games. But if they lose to RR, they will land in the complicated world of math. Here, too, KKR’s NRR will come into play and take it to the play-offs as long as MI and RR taste defeat in one of their 2 remaining matches.

King of Punjab

For Punjab Kings, KL Rahul is the most consistent and highest-scoring hitter, but the serve lacks support. Bowling was led by Mohd Shami but as a team they are not the most consistent of teams. The Kings under KL Rahul are currently in 5th place with 10 points one game to go. But this in no way reflects the chaos they are currently in. They must win the remaining match against the Chennai Super Kings by a large margin to increase the negative run-rate by -0.241 to ensure they stay ahead if all three other contenders lose their next matches.

Royals of Rajasthan

RR has lost 3 of the last 5 games played. Aside from Sanju Samson, no one has lived up to the batting department. While in bowling he was led by Chris Morris, Mutafizur Rahman and Chetan Sakariya. For the remaining matches, RR faces Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders, both of which appear to be a tall order for them.

The Rajasthan Royals team led by Sanju Samson have 10 points in 12 games, which means they have 2 games to get the desired result. The equation for the Royals is also quite simple, they must win the remaining two games to have a chance to qualify for the 2021 IPL playoffs. First they have to beat the Mumbai Indians, and this result will ensure that one contender, MI , crash out of the race. And the match against the Kolkata Knight Riders will then turn into a virtual knockout for access to the play-offs.

Mumbai Indians

For the Indians of Mumbai, the second phase of the 2021 IPL was not very good. The 2020 IPL Champion has completely lost consistency and has lost 4 games in the last 5 games played. It will take, to say the least, a miracle for them to reach the playoffs of the IPL 2021. The MI risks missing the play-offs even if they win the last two games because depending on other results the champions may be tied with other teams. The problem here is their lower-than-worst net execution rate among all four contenders. Mumbai under Rohit Sharma will face Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals in the next two games.
