No wonder here. With No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Jaguars selected Clemson’s quarterback Trevor lawrence.
Teams generally like to craft some mystery with the first overall pick. That was not the case here. New Head Coach Urban Meyer openly professed his love for Lawrence months ago, almost cementing his arrival in Jacksonville. Meyer said in March:
“I would have to say that this is the direction we are going. I’ll leave that up to the owner when we make that official decision. But I’m certainly not getting out of line that that’s certainly the direction we’re headed. Trevor checks all the boxes, you know? ”
“The number one common quality of every great player, not just the quarterback, is a competitive maniac. He is 34-2. He won a national title as a true freshman. He is a winner. I’ve seen him compete up close and personal. And then character. I see it and I witness it with my players, when guys are drafted, a lot of people do. . . They have influences in your life. For example, whether it’s on social media, if it’s about other things that don’t really have to do with winning. “
Lawrence was predictably brilliant in his day, leaving no doubt for Meyer, the offensive coordinator. Darrell Bevell, aerial games coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and the rest of the Jaguars contingent.
In his final season at Clemson, Lawrence threw for 3,153 yards with 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. And, with 69.2% of his passes completed, he finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy, despite losing time through injury.
Now it’s up to the Jets, who came up short in their quest for #TankforTrevor.
