When most of us think of Tammy Faye Bakker, we think of her participation in The PTL Club, a televangelist show she co-founded with then-husband Jim Bakker, which grew into a multi-billion dollar empire before collapsing in the wake of sex scandals and fraud, but a new biopic aims to dive into who Tammy really was. Tammy Faye’s eyes will hit theaters later this year, but People Have some first-look photos showing a nearly unrecognizable Jessica Chastain as Tammy. Check them out below!
Jessica Chastain stars alongside Andrew Garfield, who plays Tammy’s first husband, Jim Bakker. “I was so impressed by her and her story,“Chastain told People.”What I liked the most about Tammy is her ability to love. He knew what it felt like to not feel important and he didn’t want anyone to experience that.Chastain added:
Here’s a woman that I had an idea of because of what I was fed from her. Even the mascara running down her face. Actually, there is no picture of her with mascara running down her face. But people always turned her into a clown and punished her for her husband’s mistakes, of which throughout history women have been victims, atoning for the sins of men.
Transforming Jessica Chastain into Tammy Faye obviously meant many hours a day with prosthetics and wigs, but Chastain hopes people will steer clear of it. Tammy Faye’s eyes with a new sense of appreciation for Tammy, especially when it comes to her support for the LGBTQ movement. “That’s really why I wanted to do the movie,“Chastain explained.”Because in an age when people were afraid to say AIDS, we had this televangelist. And she, too, was a minister in her own right. She wasn’t just the preacher’s wife, the singer. The interview [with Christian gay minister and AIDS patient Steve Pieters] it’s phenomenal. It is so beautiful and loving. And it’s a huge turning point in terms of what people might associate God’s grace with, because I feel like she was full of grace.” Tammy Faye’s eyes I want to hit theaters in September 17, 2021.
