Apple has announced that Alex Gorsky, the current president and CEO of Johnson & Johnson, has joined the company’s board of directors.

The company noted that, under Gorsky’s mandate, Johnson & Johnson has grown into the largest healthcare company in the world. He further pointed out that the executive has extensive experience serving on the boards:

Gorsky began his tenure at Johnson & Johnson in 1988, accumulating extensive experience in sales, management and marketing before becoming CEO in 2012. Gorsky has made innovation and technology a key priority, with pioneering investments contributing to shape the future of the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer health industries.

An experienced leader in healthcare and business, Gorsky leads a global team of over 130,000 people at Johnson & Johnson. He is also a member of the Business Roundtable board of directors and chairman of the Corporate Governance committee. Gorsky serves on the boards of directors of IBM, the Travis Manion Foundation and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

The company released the following statements from Gorsky, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and Apple President Arthur Levinson:

“Alex has long been a visionary in the healthcare industry, applying his extraordinary insight, experience and passion for technology to the cause of improving lives and building healthier communities,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are thrilled to welcome him to Apple’s board of directors and know that all of us will benefit from his leadership and expertise.”

“As a caring and passionate leader, Alex has helped bring cutting-edge technologies to some of the most pressing and complex challenges in healthcare,” said Arthur Levinson, Apple’s president. “His voice and vision will help Apple continue to positively impact people’s lives through the power of technology.”

“I have long shared Apple’s belief that technology has the potential to improve lives and create healthier communities,” said Alex Gorsky. “It is an honor to join Apple’s board of directors and be part of a values-driven company that is constantly innovating to enable and improve the way we live.”

This move is not surprising as Apple continues to lead innovation in the healthcare industry. Apple CEO Tim Cook is known for saying that the company’s biggest contribution will be in health.
