Keira Knightley has spoken of how sexual harassment is such a big problem that she “literally” knows of no woman who has not been subjected to it, including herself.
The British actor said that, from the groping to the flashing, “everyone” has been harassed in some way.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar magazine, which goes on sale Wednesday, the 36-year-old said the situation was “fucking depressing.”
In response to a question about whether she had been harassed, she said: “Yes! I mean, everyone has. I literally don’t know of anyone who hasn’t been in some way, whether they’re looking at you, or groped, or some guy who says he’ll slit your throat, or punch you in the face, or whatever. . , Everybody has.
“It was when women started listing all the precautions they take when they walk home to make sure they are safe, and I thought, ‘I do each and every one of them, and I don’t even think about it.’
Knightley has previously spoken about her discomfort filming intimate scenes and how women are expected to be flirtatious or motherly. “If I was doing a story about that journey of motherhood and acceptance of the body, I feel like, I’m sorry, but it would have to be with a filmmaker,” she said in January. “I do not have an absolute prohibition, but I have it with men.”
In her latest interview, the mother of two, who reportedly pulled out of the period drama The Essex Serpent over concerns about pandemic child care, also recounted how she kept her family’s spirits up during the lockdown.
She said: “We have a trampoline in our garden, and we decided that we could only wear dresses on it. I wear red lipstick every day, and every bit of Chanel that I have in my closet, and my daughter Edie had Chanel ribbons braided in her hair and fairy wings.
“I thought, ‘What’s the point of these beautiful things in the closet when it feels quite apocalyptic and scary outside?’ It felt very important to be really happy for the children. “
She has two children, Edie and Delilah, with her husband, James Righton, a musician and former member of the band Klaxons.
