Some folks who upgraded to the second iOS 14.7 developer beta were in for an unfortunate surprise.
As reported by 9to5Mac Some users who have upgraded to iOS 14.7 beta 2 for developers have had a “SIM glitch” that rendered their phones unusable. It seems to be limited to those who use eSIM but, if it happens, you will not be able to make or receive calls or use the cell phone at all.
According to some reports on Twitter and also others shared directly with 9to5Mac, there seems to be a widespread bug in the second beta version of iOS 14.7 resulting in a “SIM Failure” message right after installing the update.
In addition to the error message, users cannot make or receive calls or use mobile data on their iPhone after the update. At least from the reports we’ve received, the bug seems to mostly affect iPhone users with eSIM rather than normal SIM.
It is unknown what is causing the error, but unfortunately there does not seem to be a workaround for this problem. If you’re running the first beta of iOS 14.7 on your primary iPhone, we recommend that you skip the second beta until Apple releases another update.
If you haven’t yet updated to the second iOS 14.7 developer beta, this might be a good time to wait until the issue is resolved. Of course, the best thing when working with a developer beta is to only install it on something other than your main device.
If you have it installed and are experiencing the error, unfortunately there is no workaround at this time.
