EXCLUSIVE: Storyboard Media and CAA Media Finance are launching sales on detective thriller Marlowe ahead of the virtual market of Cannes, we can reveal.
Taken Star Liam Neeson is set to lead the black thriller about Raymond Chandler’s iconic detective Philip Marlowe with Oscar winner Neil Jordan (The crying game) directing Oscar winner William Monahan’s film (The dead people) text.
The project has a great premise, in which Neeson could excel. Based on the novel The blonde with black eyes, the film set in the 1950s will see private detective Marlowe (Neeson) hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress. Initially it seems like an open and closed case, but Marlowe soon finds himself at the underbelly of the Hollywood film industry and unknowingly caught in the crossfire of a legendary Hollywood actress and her subversive and ambitious daughter.

The project, which was first revealed in 2017, now has new momentum with producers and sellers bringing the package to market and a scheduled start date of October 2021 with filming taking place in Los Angeles and Europe.
Pic is being produced by Alan Moloney, Gary Levinsohn, Mark Fasano and Billy Hines along with co-producer Redmond Morris and Storyboard’s Patrick Hibler and Philip Kim. The executive producers are Elisabeth Costa de Beauregard, Patrick Muldoon, Jeff Rice, Steven Sims, Harris Tulchin, Tobias Weymar and Christopher Hines.
Elisabeth Costa de Beauregard of Storyboard Media will handle international sales for the film and present it to buyers at Cannes. CAA Media Finance wants to represent at the national level.
Monahan’s screenplay is adapted by John Banville The blonde with black eyes, released in March 2014 and developed for the screen with Screen Ireland. The Irish writer wrote the novel under his pen name, Benjamin Black, as a continuation of the world and iconic characters of Raymond Chandler.
Jason bourne other Captain Phillips casting director Dan Hubbard, who recently chose the action photo of Liam Neeson Memory which is currently filming in Europe, is also on board.
While Neeson and Monahan worked together on Kingdom of heavens, and Neeson and Jordan also worked together on Michael collins other Breakfast on Pluto, this will be the first project in which all three will collaborate.
The character Marlowe, immortalized in Raymond Chandler’s crime novels as The big dream, has been portrayed on screen by some of the greats, including Humphrey Bogart, James Garner, Robert Mitchum, Danny Glover, and James Caan.
