Liga MX 2021 Apertura: updated results, standings in the running for liguilla playoff places in Mexican football

A total of 18 clubs started the Liga MX 2021 Apertura season with the dream of lifting the league trophy in December. But only the top 12 in the standings advance to the postseason, or the liguilla, as it is more popularly known.

What is at stake: There were a lot of struggles for the position during the regular 17-game season. This is because finishing in the top four in the standings gives a team an automatic place in the quarter-finals. Teams that finish n. 5 through n. 12 must survive a single elimination match just to reach the quarterfinals. The “no. 13 to n. 18 teams are out of the game.

Why ranking matters: The Regular Season rankings also come into play during the quarter-finals and semifinals of the playoffs, which take place on two legs. The team with the most goals scored in both games advances. But if the teams are tied on goals scored at the end of that second leg, the club that finished higher in the regular season standings will advance. This rule disappears for the final, where teams will go into overtime and penalties if necessary.

Standings Liga MX 2021 Apertura

The ranking is based on the points that teams collect during the 17 regular season games: three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. If the teams are tied on points, the following tie-breaks are used in this specific order:

1. Higher goal difference
2. Most goals scored
3. Most goals scored away
4. Head-to-head matches between tied teams
5. Best placing in “quotient” ranking (points per game in the previous six seasons)
6th Fair play ranking (based on yellow and red cards received)
7. Random extraction

With these tie-breaks in mind, here’s what the updated table looks like:
