Ligue 1 ended in most memorable fashion late on Sunday when Lille OSC were crowned Ligue 1 champions after a narrow 2-1 away win over Angers. Courtesy of goals from Jonathan David and Burak Yilmaz, Lille managed to clinch the title and end the ten-year wait to lift the league title.
Les Douges outscored the defending champs Paris saint germain by a single point and was second with 82 points. Despite an away win and goals by Kylian Mbappé and an own goal by Romain Faivre against Brest, PSG came up short to retain the league title.
Veteran forward Burak Yilmaz has been Lille’s best player with 16 goals and 5 assists in 23 appearances for the club. Canadian forward Jonathan David also played an integral role, scoring 13 goals and getting two assists in 28 appearances this season. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan kept 21 clean sheets this season and was also selected in the French team for Euro 2020.
Christopher Galtier’s men shone this year and his path to success looks a lot like Leicester City’s 2015-16 Premier League triumph. This is also the fourth Ligue 1 title in the club’s history. Meanwhile, Monaco came third, drawing 0-0 against Lens and booking a place in the Champions League.
Lyon came fourth after a 3-2 loss to Nice on Sunday. Two goals from Karl Toko Elmambi weren’t enough for Lyon to seal their place in the Champions League, as they will compete in the Europa League next season.
Lille’s achievement deserves a lot of applause and recognition, as it is difficult to beat a wealthy club like PSG for League 1 qualification. Additionally, PSG has multiple seasoned superstars like Neymar Jr, Kylian Mbappé, Marquinhos and Angel Di Maria. According to the transfer market, the value of the PSG squad is 828 million euros. Meanwhile, the value of the Lille team is € 297.50 million, less than half the value of the PSG team.
Kylian Mbappé was also awarded Ligue 1 Player of the Year, as he was the league’s top scorer with 26 goals this season. Galtier was also voted best coach for the third time.
