TOKYO – American gymnast Sunisa Lee took bronze in the final of the uneven bars event at the Tokyo Olympics, adding another medal to her highly successful Games.
Belgian Nina Derwael took gold and Anastasiia Iliankova with team Russia took silver.
Lee, an 18-year-old from Minnesota, became America’s best hope for gold in the singles competition when Simone Biles retired to focus on her mental health. Lee delivered strong routines on all machines, winning the top award in individual gymnastics.
The uneven bars is your best event.
Lee spun around and twisted from bar to bar in a bright blue jersey. She smiled and looked confident as she walked off the mat, and seemed a bit surprised by her score, 14,500. According to the international governing body for gymnastics, “this one didn’t have all the connections it’s known for.”
Derwael, Lee’s main rival in the event at these Olympics, scored 15,200 on a routine with a higher degree of difficulty.
