In an apparent swipe to the Fox News Presenter Tucker Carlson, anti-Trump Republican Liz Cheney, said on Sunday it was “dangerous” and “un-American” to suggest that the deadly assault on the US Capitol on January 6 was a “false flag” attack.
Conspiracy theorists claim that “false flag” attacks are organized by the government to achieve their own ends. A documentary produced by Carlson for the Fox Nation streaming service, Patriot Purge, contains a similar suggestion about the attack on the Capitol.
Five people died around the events of January 6, when Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in an attempt to overturn Joe Biden’s electoral defeat.
Trump was indicted for inciting the attack, but escaped conviction when enough Republican senators remained loyal.
Cheney, who has condemned The Carlson series earlier, he spoke with Fox News Sunday. The presenter, Chris Wallace, asked if there was “any truth” in the claims that January 6 was a “false flag operation, a case of deep-state liberals who created conservatives and Trump supporters.”
Cheney replied: “None. It’s the same thing that you hear that 9/11 is an inside job. It’s not American to spread this kind of lies, and they are lies.”
Cheney, who voted for Trump’s impeachment, is one of two Republican members of the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol. The other, Adam Kinzinger from Illinois, will retire from the house next year.
But the Wyoming congresswoman, a strict Conservative whose father is former Vice President Dick Cheney, has shown no signs of letting up despite losing her leadership position in Washington and luring a main challenger home.
Cheney appeared Sunday with South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, the Democratic group leader, with whom (and Wallace) she was honored this weekend for being willing to work across the aisle.
“We have an obligation beyond bias,” Cheney said, “Democrats and … republicans together, to make sure we understand every single piece of the facts about what happened [on 6 January] and to make sure the people who did it are held accountable.
“And calling it a false flag operation to spread this kind of lies is really dangerous.”
