One of the most iconic former members of the Los Angeles Lakers doesn’t feel that point guard Dennis Schroder fits in well with the current edition.
Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson criticized Schroder’s performance after the defending champion Lakers were defeated by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
“Schroder, I don’t think he’s a Laker,” Johnson said Friday at AM 570 LA Sports. “That’s just my opinion. I don’t know if they will sign him again or not. I don’t think he has the winning mindset and attitude that we need, and he had a chance to show that in this series, and for me, he failed in this series. But again, if he comes back as a Laker, I’ll support him, cheer him on and all that, but I don’t think he’s a Laker. “
The 27-year-old Schroder performed well in the first three games of the series, yet struggled to make an impact after Anthony Davis suffered a groin strain in Game 4. In fact, Schroder had eight points. in that game and didn’t score at all, missing all nine shots, in Los Angeles’ 115-85 loss to Phoenix in Game 5.
Schroder was able to pull it off in Game 6 on Thursday, scoring 20 points on a series-ending 113-100 setback against the Suns.
The Lakers acquired Schroder from the Oklahoma City Thunder in November in exchange for Danny Green and Jaden McDaniels.
To be fair, Johnson is no longer in a position of power for the Lakers. Vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka reportedly offered Schroder a four-year, $ 84 million extension.
Schroder, however, said he did not decline the extension in response to being included in trade talks with Toronto Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry.
“Let me clear that up first. I didn’t reject the extension because I was in business negotiations, ”Schroder said on ESPN. “I also own a team in Germany. I try to run my organization in Germany as fairly as possible, but after all, it is still a business. … That’s what Rob did too. He told me the story. He heard it. He wasn’t even cool for the trade deadline, but he did talk to them to see. … I would also listen to offers. … You don’t know what you can get and you see what your options are. “
Schroder averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 61 games this season.
