This is the week. It is finally here. By Zack Snyder League of Justice It is only a few days away from its launch on HBO Max, but the surprises do not stop coming. It was already known that characters like Darkseid, Cyborg, Barry Allen, Iris West, Green Lanterns and Martian Manhunter (whom we last saw in Batman v superman) everyone will get more screen time, something that never made it to the 2017 version. But while we’ve already seen the other characters, the latest trailer for Snyder Cut brings with it its proper and rather surprising first look at the Martian Manhunter.
We met the Martian Manhunter, played by Harry Lennix, for the first time in Iron Man as General and later Secretary of Defense Calvin Swanwick. While fan theories circulated, these movies never confirmed that he was actually a superhero. After Joss Whedon heavily edited League of Justice released and received overwhelmingly negative reviews, Snyder confirmed that he had planned to reveal Swanwick by transforming into the DCEU’s Martian Manhunter in the film.
Evidently (and thankfully), Snyder has stuck to his original plans. In the final trailer released by HBO Max, not only do we get a lot more of Darkseid, The Flash, and Cyborg in action, but we also see Martha Kent’s eyes glowing red after she leaves Lois Lane’s apartment. This goes well with the storyboard that Snyder had shared in 2019, where he revealed a scene that featured the Martian Manhunter that never made it to the stage montage. In the storyboard, Martha’s eyes were seen to briefly glow red and then first transform into Martian Manhunter before becoming General Swanwick, confirming that the superhero from Mars had been living in disguise on Earth the entire time. .
When Joss Whedon took over as director of League of Justice In 2016, he re-photographed the scene and threw out all the Martian Manhunter reveal. Instead, we saw the infamous scene where Lois Lane and Martha Kent remembered Clark Kent, with the latter recalling that their son was called Lois, “the thirstiest woman he has ever known” because of his passion for journalism. She then hastily rectified it to “hungrier” as Lois gave an awkward laugh. The decision to change this to accommodate the original plan, to feature Martian Manhunter, is already a huge step up from Whedon’s version of the film.
We also see Green Lantern Yalan Gur in action, which is a huge leap from his blink and lose cameo in 2017. League of Justice. But no matter how different or better the Snyder’s Cut is, the truth at the end of the day (which even the director has accepted) is that his version of the movie will not be considered canon by Warner Bros (not that there is such a thing as “continuity “in the DCEU). The fact is, there will be no sequels or solo movies exploring the cliff-hangers their League of Justice It will end, which means that even if the movie does advance the stories of Martian Manhunter or any of his other characters, we will sadly never get to see what Snyder had in store for them.
