Every week I’ve been adding a short trivia section to the THCB Reader, our weekly newsletter that summarizes the best of THCB that week (Sign up here!). Then I had the idea to add them to the blog. They are short and generally not too sweet! –Matthew holt
In this week’s health care news, Shannon Brownlee and her fellow rebels at the Lown Institute decided to have a little fun and compare which nonprofit hospitals actually made up for the tax breaks they got by providing more benefits to the community. Lots of hospitals you’ve never heard of topped the list. What was most interesting were the hospitals that led the reverse list, in the sense that they yielded less to the benefit of the community than they obtained in tax exemptions. That list has a lot of names. want I’ve heard of!
Given that many on that list run sizable hedge funds and then provide a bit of healthcare services, perhaps it’s time to totally rethink our deference to these hospital system monopolies. And I’m not just talking about making it harder for them to merge and raise prices as suggested by the recent Biden Executive Order.
